Italian CITI Para World Series stop starts with Fantin WR
The celebration of flags and smiles begins in Lignano
The master of the house Antonio Fantin, welcomes his way, the over 340 athletes to the Italian leg of the CITI Para World Series 2024 in Lignano. Fantin, 22, sets a new world record in the 100m freestyle S6 (1’02″70) during the first session of competitions. “I’m really happy to have improved my record here; this is the pool where I train every day, and I hope this is just the beginning,” said the gold medalist of the 100m freestyle at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
A parade of 55 flags frames the Bella Italia pool, where athletes of all ages challenge themselves to achieve their goals in such an important season. From the packed stands, one can sense everyone’s desire to get into the water and contribute to this spectacle of music, lights, and performances, awaiting the first finals that will award the medals of this edition starting at 5:00 PM local time.
“I have participated in 3 editions of the Paralympics, and been in this circuit for many years, but it’s the first time I’ve come to Lignano, and I didn’t expect to find such a beautiful atmosphere and such a high-level organization,” commented Mexican athlete Haidee Viviana Aceves Perez with a smile.
The organization is facilitated by the proximity of all attendees between accommodation and the pool, thanks to the location hosting the event. Many athletes competing today have been in Lignano for several days and have had the opportunity to experience the Bella Italia Village, training in the competition pool and testing their sensations. The Village is not just logistical assistance, but also an opportunity to spend time together with friends and colleagues from other teams gathered here just steps away from each other 24 hours a day.
